The tracks I’ve listened to by NONVIOLENCE are energetic, indie rock masterpieces. The vocals are both powerful and emotive, while remaining raw and real. The songs often tilt in unexpected directions, demanding multiple listens. Even more impressive is the drive band leader Joshua R. Lewis has shown to push the boundaries of what it means to be an independent artist. This story is perhaps best told in his own words.

The NONVIOLENCE Rockethub campaign has recently been launched to raise funds and it’s a great opportunity to get involved in a multi-media project led by this innovative artist. The campaign will help raise the necessary funds to manufacture and merchandise the record. It’s the debut album for NONVIOLENCE, as well as the launch of new indie label Hummingbird Ink.

Upcoming Hummingbird Ink projects will include a folder of limited vinyl releases, short films, videos, and other web/interactive content. It’s all modeled in what Joshua calls a ‘philanthropic, entrepreneurial’ way. He compares it to a TOMS Shoes type operation for independent artists, with every release having a charitable association.

Free tracks are available at http://hummingbird.bandcamp.com/ with more downloads coming soon!

The History of NONVIOLENCE

From Joshua:

The ‘NONVIOLENCE’ project has been falling together quite rapidly. It’s been a speedy, though beautiful, gorgeous, serendipitous progression. In short, for the past couple of years I’d been jumping around town working as an assistant to film shoots and recording sessions. It wasn’t until last fall that I’d taken out an acoustic, grown confident in a few complete songs, and for the first time, performed live.

Those first performances, September & October of ‘09, took place within the Local Correspondents community. I was howling one of my songs on a friends rooftop, when they mentioned that I should check out the Bar4 scene. From there, it was people like Greg Tuohey (Lowry) that heard the little bits of nervous, singing before people for the first time antics, and demanded that I set off to capture something tangible on tape.

That is exactly what I did, in December, in only 11 days, with the help of friend Marc Goodman (http://strangeweatherbrooklyn.com). Holed up in his studio, we tracked and mixed the entire 11 song debut. Marc ran the knobs and helmed the console, while I jumped from instrument to instrument, quickly constructing what I’d been composing consciously and subconsciously, asleep and awake, for the better part of the past 2 years. It sort of just happened…

Under the name NONVIOLENCE, it’s a very serious, lifestyle sort of thing… I truly believe that these songs are important. These songs are posing questions, and attempting to ‘get under the skin’ – jabbing at the inner and outer realities of this transitional, universally spitfire way of life. Now more than ever there is a way to truly use ‘campaigning,’ advertising, and our uncanny technologies to draw large exposure to social movement. This project is my first attempt at moving forward with inspiring what seems to be ‘lost values’ in the sense of self and the rapidly endangered natural plain around us.

Now it’s about once and for all getting a solid cast of players together (which is currently happening). From there it’s funding the album and getting it finally released, then slowly unveiling an experimental video piece for each song on the record, then moving (at blazing speeds) towards the road, hoping for as many solid opportunities to showcase this debut as possible.

Check out this article from the WILD honey pie covering Great Elk’s recent live show at Rockwood Stage 2.

Excerpt and photo from the article:

“Led by Paul Basile and Patrick Hay, Great Elk managed something that I have seen few times in a live performance. They, and their band, produced a certain equilibrium between a harmony that engulfs and then, effortlessly, fulfils your want for pace and passion, at precisely the right time. With rousing drums and crescendo of voice, you can personally feel the extent of meaning behind both Basile and Hay. These guys are passionate about everything they are doing and everything that they are trying to accomplish, and that comes across in how they perform…”

Joshua Sanders

myspace.com/joshuasandersacoustic

Josh’s songwriting shows the influences of his two longtime heroes, Bruce Springsteen and Townes van Zandt, and he has recently been receiving radio airplay on Americana/country radio (WICR 88.7 in Indianapolis) as well as internet radio (Terry Ann McClean’s Bluegrass Mix). Though a native of New York City, he became corrupted driving cross country on his way to college in California when he heard local bands covering “Take me back to Tulsa, I’m too Young to Marry” and “Mama Don’t Let You Babies Grow up to be Cowboys”. A summer spent hanging out in Santa Barbara and listening to country bands covering Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash tunes at the now defunct Sportsman Bar sealed the deal.

Josh’s musical background is primarily in jazz, blues and bluegrass. He studied voice in Los Angeles with Susan Strietwieser and in New York with Janie Barnett; guitar in Los Angeles with Gary Mandell of Boulevard Music and in New York with Glenn Alexander and Matt Smith. He is currently studying with New York City guitar legend Robin Greenstein and performs regularly at small venues in and around NYC and the Hudson Valley. Mr. Sanders’ early band experience was primarily electric blues, which he found was tremendously helpful in terms of putting all those lessons to some kind of practical use, as well as figuring out how to work with the bass and drums to form a singular sound. Since 1999 he has attended several songwriting circles here in New York, with a goal, rarely achieved, of writing one song every week.

Reddi

Singer/songwriter Reddi combines acoustic rock with indie pop appeal. Her songwriting stems from a personal history of journals and poetry as well as everyday inspiration found in relationships, in her morning cup of coffee and on the subway to and from her Brooklyn apartment. The result is songs that are both unapologetically universal and unique.
