On Sunday February 28th masterminds Lara Ewen and Emily Raw hosted the first Mayfly pop-up record store at Kill Devil Hill in Brooklyn. The store featured photographs of musicians by local photographers, in-store performances by indie musicians, hand-printed t-shirts, burn your own mix tapes, and more! Needless to say it was a huge success. We all look forward to seeing where Mayfly will pop-up next in Brooklyn and NYC.

Chris Lind

With influences like Jeff Buckley, Feist and Chet Baker, singer/songwriter Chris Lind has developed a unique and personal sound, defined by soaring vocals and hauntingly beautiful melodies. Growing up, his father’s position as a flutist in the Philadelphia Orchestra exposed Chris to a wide variety of classical music. He spent his teenage years visiting family in Hawaii and eventually studying the Hawaiian style of guitar playing – Slack Key (Ki Ho’alu). Now he regularly performs at many of NYC’s most respected listening rooms and is preparing to record his next highly anticipated full band EP.

Flanagan Smith (Porkchop Records):

Michael Patrick Flanagan Smith has corresponded with Pete Seeger, played shows with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and written & starred in “Woody Guthrie dreams before dying,” a play about the American folk icon.

His first EP, “All the Cars My Friends Stole” was recorded live over 3 nights.  The music & stories from the show are based on Smith’s youth, growing up in a broke down farmhouse in rural Maryland, his friends & family and the trouble they got into.

Smith is currently working on a full length studio album with members of Wye Oak, Arboretum, Baltimore Afro-Beat Society and others.

Biography
A classical pianist since the age of 5, Sabrina Chap initially came to songwriting once she picked up her first guitar in college. Her first album, Bedroom Sessions, is a collection of folk songs written exclusively on guitar and recorded in her bedroom using Garageband.

After years of developing a strong folk following at places like the now defunct Burkhart Underground, Uncommon Ground and virtually every coffeehouse in Chicago, she moved to Milwaukee to try find a new sound. It was during that time that she turned back to the piano, and learned Scott Joplin’s infamous ‘Maple Leaf Rag’, and began writing songs in the ragtime tradition.

Since moving to New York, she has performed at a variety of musical venues, such as Rockwood Music Hall, Bar 169, Vivaldi Café, Sidewalk Café and Bar 4. She has done a solo tour of England, Scotland and Germany, as well as completing a tour through Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium with Argentinian songwriter, Agustina Mancinelli. Currently, she’s performing in Berlin in anticipation of her debut album, “Oompa!”

“Oompa!” is a hilarious, yet heartbreaking romp featuring a variety of musical styles. Drummer Ethan Shorter (The Mumbles) brings his rock solid funk drumming to the album, while bassist Tucker Yaro lends his incredible jazz influence. The Red Hook Ramblers bring their New Orleans dixieland sound to tracks like “Failed Waitress/Failed Astronaut”, while bluegrass fiddler Melody Berger is featured on “Carolina”. A trio of string players from Juilliard lend their classical counterpoint to the “Boat Ride”- all of these musical styles seamlessly weave through Sabrina’s storytelling lyrics.

Local Correspondents congratulates Hannah Fairchild on the release of her debut album “Paper Kingdoms.” Those of you who have not yet seen Hannah perform should get yourselves to Bar4 on March 31st for her CD release party, which includes an amazing All Girl Line Up. We’ve been privileged to have Hannah as part of our community. She has a powerful voice and a commanding presence on stage that most of us can only envy. Her lyrics are nuanced, and only benefit from additional listens. We are very excited to hear her ambitious DIY project this March.

Biography

Hannah Fairchild moved from Minnesota to New York City in 2005 with the intent of becoming an actress… only to become a barista. Two spells of near homelessness, tens of excruciating auditions, and millions of cappuccinos later, she realized that an acting career did not mesh well with her artistic sensibilities and intense dislike of being bossed around.

After purchasing the cheapest guitar available to her with her 2006 tax return (rock on, IRS), Hannah began to write songs and perform them in accommodating bars around the city, garnering comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon.

In summer of 2009, Hannah began work on her debut album Paper Kingdoms. The album was recorded entirely in her apartment, and but for one piano line (courtesy of Duck Zimmerman) she arranged and performed the album herself. After teaching herself Pro Tools and bass, blowing out the hard drives on two separate computers, and breaking her right ankle en route to the Apple Store, she is pleased to announce that it is finally finished.

An All Girl Lineup at Bar 4 will mark the album’s release on March 31st. Hannah will be joined by feature performers Annie Ragz, Debbie Miller, and Ten Antenna.

Hannah currently resides in Brooklyn, and gets into as much trouble as she can afford in order to acquire more material for future songs.
